15 Month Checkup

Jake had his 15 month checkup today. He weighed 32 lbs (95% percentile) & 32 inches long (75-90% percentile). Of course I had to ask the doctor if Jake's weight was okay. He assured me that Jake was a healthy weight. He is just a big boy. (And a heavy one at that!) Some updates in the life of this 15-month-old:

Loves:
  • Cell phones & laptops
  • Playing outside & looking outside windows
  • Being read to while sitting in your lap
  • Rubbing his belly, showing off his belly & sticking his finger in his nostril. (He is not picking his nose, he just likes to rest his finger in his nose. Gross, but funny looking!)
  • Playing with balls. He hasn't mastered throwing yet. He raises his arm above his head & then drops the ball behind his back. We're working with him!
  • Helping. He especially loves to help you turn off the lights & shut doors

Challenges:

  • Toddler tantrums. These happen when you make him come inside or take something away from him.
  • Periodic shyness. It is getting better, but he still gets shy. Especially around women. It is the weirdest thing. I guess he is just a guy's guy. When he is in his "shy" mood, he acts kind of rude. If you try to talk to him, he'll push you away. Frustrating, but if you let him warm up to you, then he is fine.
  • Aggressiveness. Jake tends to play rough. He is all boy. (But he is still mommy's cuddle bug!)

Sleep: Jake usually starts getting ready for bed around 8:00 PM. He wakes up around 7:00 AM. He is pretty good about going to sleep. He sleeps with a stuffed pig, stuffed Curious George, and a soft blanket. Jake is a very sound sleeper, just like his mom & dad! He still takes 2 naps a day, but is getting closer to dropping one of the naps.

Eating: Jake ate great the first 14 months. He took to breastfeeding so smoothly, then to baby food & table food. He spoiled us! The last month though, he has become pickier about what he eats & when he eats it. One day he will gobble something down, then the next day he won't touch it. He still eats pretty healthy though. Lots of grilled food & vegetables. He loves fruits, especially mandarin oranges. He also loves anything off of my plate. We've managed to stay away from juice for now. He drinks milk & water (with a splash of crystal light!). When he does eat something he likes, he shoves as much of it in his mouth as possible. If you have to hold food in your mouth with your hand, then you have too much food in your mouth! He has 16 teeth, but he doesn't use them. He shoves food in his mouth & then swallows. So you have to keep a close eye on him, because he is constantly choking!

School: Jake is still in the Turtles class. He is one of the oldest now (he started the school year as the youngest). He loves his teachers, especially Miss Ashley. He is so sweet. He always runs up & hugs them when he gets there in the mornings. He loves outside time & food time. They said as soon as they bring the food to the door, Jake runs over to the table & sits down. I love his art projects that he makes. We are so blessed to have found such a special place for Jake to spend his weekdays!

New Accomplishments:

  • When you ask, Jake can point to his belly button, nose & mouth.
  • He blabbers a lot. He will sometimes repeat words if he is in the right mood. Last night he repeated turtle (ta ta), bird (ba) & duck (da). He regularly says mama, dada, bye-bye, uh-oh, nana. If his mood is right, he will say belly button (ba ba) & car (ca). Basically everything ends with an a. He does get the mama & dada meanings mixed up sometimes though. He calls me mama, but also says mama when he wants more of something (no matter who he is talking to). He calls Robbie dada, but also says dada in response whenever someone says "I love you" to him.
  • Tons of new mouth sounds & faces
  • He loves to blow kisses, kiss you & give hugs
  • Climbing down stairs (which gives me a heart attack!)

The play set is put together & this afternoon was Jake's first time to play with it. He loves it!!

He insists on sitting in the swing backwards

Working on the climbing
His favorite way to go down the slide

Trying to climb up the slide
On top of the world!
